Use 4 Essential Oils in 3 Different Awakening Blends
As an Aromatherapist I’m drawn to creating blends that provide a specific energy or target a particular intention. I especially enjoy choosing 3 or 4 essential oils and experimenting with the ratios to change the aroma, energy, and intention.
One such collection of four essential oils is: Grapefruit, Lavandin, Peppermint, and Elemi. Each oil brings something special to the table, and together they create a synergy that’s both invigorating and grounding.

About the Four Awakening Essential Oils
Lavandin (Lavandula x intermedia): A hybrid of True Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and Spike Lavender (Lavandula latifolia), Lavandin has an herbaceous, floral aroma. It combines the calming nature of True Lavender with the fresh awakening energy of Spike Lavender
Learn more about Lavandin essential oil and how to use it to support your wellness in my book Lavender: Lavender Recipes & the Plant Behind the Oil. You’ll find Lavender at:
- My Etsy Store (signed paperback, US)
- Amazon (paperback & Kindle Unlimited, international).
Grapefruit (Citrus x paradisi): This bright citrus peel oil is known for its uplifting energy. The aroma of Grapefruit is sparkling, tart, with a sweet perfume-like background. In fact, grapefruit is a valued fragrance among perfumers. It’s associated with feelings of joy, optimism, and creativity.
One of my favorite essential oil pairings is Grapefruit and Lavandin. This combination gently lifts the spirits while cleansing energy and supporting the immune system. It can be combined with a wide variety of essential oils to change the intention and therapeutics. Learn more about the versatility of this combination in my Lavandin Grapefruit Duet post.
Elemi (Canarium luzonicum): This unique oil, steam distilled from the tree’s resin, has a lemony, green, peppery aroma. A member of the Incense Family of plants, which includes Frankincense, Elemi is known for its grounding and uplifting properties, promoting emotional balance and well-being.
Peppermint (Mentha x piperita): Peppermint’s powerful, minty aroma is invigorating and stimulating. This feel-good essential oil sparks creativity and positive thinking. It’s associated with mental alertness, improved concentration, and respiratory ease.
When combined, the four essential oils create a mentally awakening experience. The overall effect is uplifting, invigorating, and balancing, making it ideal for a variety of intentions.
Three Blends with These Essential Oils
Here are three ways to create your own Awakening blend, depending on your desired goal and aromatic preferences.
⭐️Awaken Morning Motivation (Diffuser & Roll-On)
- 3 drops Lavandin essential oil
- 3 drops Grapefruit essential oil
- 2 drops Elemi essential oil
- 1 drop Peppermint essential oil
🌺See my Recommended Suppliers below
This blend is perfect for starting your day, promoting alertness and focus along with a calm groundedness. Diffuse this blend in the morning as you prepare for the day or make a motivating roll-on.
To make a roll-on, add the essential oils to a 10ml roller bottle and top with Jojoba (or your favorite carrier). Then cap and rock to combine. (The roller bottle shown here also comes in amber and blue. They are available on Amazon.)
To Use: As this a 5% dilution, it’s only for spot application. I recommend applying to pulse points—the neck, wrists, crooks of the elbows, and backs of the knees.
⭐️Awakening the Creative Spark (Diffuser)
- 4 drops Grapefruit essential oil
- 3 drops Elemi essential oil
- 1 drop Lavandin essential oil
- 1 drop Peppermint essential oil
🌺See my Recommended Suppliers below
This blend stimulates creativity and focus, encouraging openness and mental clarity. Diffuse this blend while working on a creative project or brainstorming new ideas.
⭐️An Awakening Afternoon Pick-Me-Up (Diffuser, Roll-on, & Inhaler)
- 3 drops Elemi essential oil
- 3 drops Grapefruit essential oil
- 2 drops Lavandin essential oil
- 1 drop Peppermint essential oil
🌺See my Recommended Suppliers below
This blend is ideal for an afternoon slump, promoting deep-cleansing breaths, while enhancing feelings of balance and well-being. This blend is great in a diffuser or roll-on, but my favorite way to use this blend is as an inhaler!
To make an inhaler, combine double the drops in a small bowl then add your inhaler wick. Using tweezers transfer the saturated wick to the inhaler barrel.
To Use: Inhale shallowly through the nose several times, holding the scent in your sinuses and exhaling through your mouth. Then inhale deeply through the nose several times, exhaling through your mouth. (Reusable inhalers are available from Aromatics International and Amazon.)
Intention Setting in Aromatherapy
When using any of these blends of essential oils, it’s helpful to set an intention. Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Start my day with a positive, motivated mindset
- Boost my creativity and problem-solving skills
- Overcome a creative block or feeling stuck
- Find clarity and focus during a challenging task
- Promote feelings of peace and well-being
I encourage you to experiment with the different blend options and application methods to find what works best for you. Remember, Aromatherapy is a journey of exploration, so have fun and enjoy the awakening experience!
📌Essential Oils & Aromatherapy Pins
Mom’s Shopping List
Grapefruit and Peppermint are likely already in your collection of essential oils. If you’ve only used Lavender in the past, I highly recommend giving Lavandin a try. I am a fan of its aroma and combination of energetics. And Elemi…this is one of the “uncommon” essential oils that really should be more common, imho. It’s one of my favorite breath-opening, grounding essential oils
Here’s where I get the essential oils and supplies I use to make these blends:
