FrankinShine’s Fall in Love with Frankincense Essential Oil

Fall is the perfect time to incorporate the incredibly supportive Frankincense essential oil into daily life. This blend of essential oils isn’t actually a Halloween-y blend or even a traditional Fall scent. I just couldn’t resist the name: FrankinShine!

Inspired by Frankincense Essential Oil

All of the Frankincense essential oils have complex aromas with varying degrees of fresh, sweet, resinous, balsamic, citrus, and coniferous notes. By combining them with other essential oils, you can enhance these notes to create beautifully aromatic, supportive blends.

In FrankinShine, a touch of sunshiny Blood Orange and sweet Atlas Cedarwood brings out the citrus and coniferous notes in this blend, so the Frankincense shines.

⭐️FrankinShine Recipe

  • 3 drops Frankincense essential oil (Boswellia carteri)
  • 2 drops Frankincense Frereana essential oil (Boswellia frereana)
  • 2 drops Frankincense Sacra essential oil (Boswellia sacra)
  • 1 drop Blood Orange essential oil (Citrus x sinensis sanguinelli)
  • 1 drop Atlas Cedarwood essential oil (Cedrus atlantica)

FrankinShine Stock Bottle Drop Counts

Here are the drop counts for a 5ml essential oil bottle. This will hold about 100 drops of essential oil (depending on the viscosity of the oil and the size of the reducer orifice).

Add your drops directly to the essential oil bottle. Then insert the reducer and cap tightly. Finally roll the bottle between the palms of your hands. This allows the oils to fully blend with each other and it imparts a bit of your energy to the blend.

And remember: affix a label right away!

Why These Essential Oils?

“(The day) cheered even me by the loveliness of its sunshine…and, forgetting my solitude and deformity, dared to be happy…I even raised my humid eyes with thankfulness towards the blessed sun which bestowed such joy upon me.”

The Monster, in Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (1797-1851)(1)

As I read his recount of this moment in time, I imagined the “Monster” in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, standing at the edge of the forest, lifting his face to the sun, his spirit eased, and a peaceful joy filling his being. This is the way I feel when I smell Frankincense essential oil.

FrankinShine Blood Orange, Atlas Cedarwood, and Frankincense Essential Oils

The Frankincense Essential Oils (Boswellia spp.)

For thousands of years, East to West, Frankincense has been an important part of religious ceremony and cleansing rituals. As incense or essential oil, Frankincense elevates and opens the mind, calms the spirit, and soothes frayed emotions. Frankincense helps bring body and soul into balance.

Frankincense Carteri has a fresh, piney, balsamic aroma with a definite citrus note and a bit of pepperiness. It has a very gentle, breath-opening effect that slows and deepens breathing to promote a calm, meditative energy.

Frankincense Frereana is also called Magdi and the King of all Frankincense.(2) It has a diffusive, sweet, floral, resinous aroma. I always think of floral oils as having gentle healing properties. Frankincense Frereana certainly falls into that category. It’s nourishing to skin, immune system, and mind.

Frankincense Sacra is also known as Royal Frankincense and Hojari.(3) It has a warm, sweet, balsamic aroma, deeper and richer than Carteri or Frereana. This precious rejuvenating oil enhances feelings of serenity and spiritual connection.

Kiko the Frankincense Essential Oil Dog

Kiko Dog Loves Frankincense Essential Oil!

I had FrankinShine diffusing while I was sitting on the couch reading and writing over the weekend. Kiko, who loves Frankincense essential oil, joined me for a little nap! Here’s another Kiko Dog Favorite that’s great for any day with loud noises or fireworks:

Blood Orange Essential Oil (Citrus x sinensis sanguinelli)

A natural mutation of Sweet Orange, the Blood Orange develops its rich ruby color when nighttime temperatures drop. This makes Blood Orange essential oil my top choice of citrus for Fall and Winter blends.

Blood Orange has a sweet orange aroma, richer and more complex than Sweet Orange. It also has a soft woodsy note that adds to its complexity. What I like about combining Blood Orange with Frankincense is that it enhances both the citrus and coniferous notes of the Frankincense essential oil.

Energetically, Blood Orange provides a calming uplift. It’s like a gentle smile, rather than a wide grin (that would be Lime!). It works alongside Frankincense essential oil to move stagnant energy, helping one feel lighter, energetically fresher.

Atlas Cedarwood Essential Oil (Cedrus atlantica)

As a base note, Atlas Cedarwood essential oil anchors the FrankinShine blend. It’s rich, sweet, and coniferous—think about the aroma of a cedar chest.

Energetically, Atlas Cedarwood is calming and grounding. While it promotes deep breathing to clear the mind, it also helps center scattered thoughts and enhance feelings of security.

Sadly, the majestic Atlas Cedar have been impacted by climate change and over-harvesting and are now listed by the IUCN as Endangered.(4) (See my Atlas Cedar Spotlight.) Therefore, when sourcing Atlas Cedarwood essential oil, please ensure the supplier provides a sustainably sourced product.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein

Who is the true “monster” in Frankenstein? Is it the poor nameless creature who was abandoned at “birth” by his creator and rejected by society? Or is it Dr Victor Frankenstein who tried to create the perfect man and then deserted him in fear and disgust?

2018 marked the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s groundbreaking literary masterpiece. If you haven’t read it, maybe now’s the time. Perhaps you’ll be able to answer the question: Who’s the Monster?

Frankenstein is available on Amazon (paperback or Kindle), or from your local bookseller or library.
