The Energetics of Autumn Calm Essential Oils

Autumn is a time of transition, a season that invites us to slow down and reflect. As days grow shorter and nights become cooler, our bodies and minds may crave balance, tranquility, and comfort. Aromatherapy offers us gentle support during this transformative time.

Autumn Calm, an essential oil blend of Blood Orange, Ho Wood, Cedarwood, and Nutmeg, can help nurture harmony and restore balance. Each of these essential oils contributes its unique aromatic, therapeutic, and energetic qualities to create a blend that is both soothing and uplifting.

  • The fresh, sweet citrus aroma of Blood Orange provides a burst of uplifting positivity.
  • Ho Wood has a subtle floral aroma that fosters tranquility.
  • The woody base note of Virginian Cedarwood provides a grounding, centering energy.
  • A traditional seasonal scent, warm Nutmeg enhances feelings of comfort.

The overall energy of Autumn Calm is, well, calming! It’s a lovely blend to diffuse in the evening to encourage winding down and peaceful sleep. (See other ways to experience Autumn Calm below.)

Stock Bottle Drop Counts

Here are the drop counts for a 5ml essential oil bottle. This will hold about 100 drops of essential oil (depending on the viscosity of the oil and the size of the reducer orifice).

Add your drops directly to the essential oil bottle. Then insert the reducer and cap tightly. Finally roll the bottle between the palms of your hands for at least 30 seconds. This allows the oils to fully blend with each other and it imparts a bit of your energy to the blend.

And remember: Affix a label right away!

Autumn Calm Stock Bottle

  • 22 drops Ho Wood (Cinnamomum camphor ct linalool)

About the Autumn Calm Essential Oils

Blood Orange (Citrus x sinensis sanguinelli)

Blood Orange is a common ingredient in Autumnal seasonal scent blends

Blood Orange helps to dispel feelings of sadness and anxiety. Its vibrant, citrusy aroma imparts a sense of joy and optimism.

The bright, cheerful scent of Blood Orange can also stimulate the mind and enhance mood, making it an ideal choice for combating the blues that may accompany shorter days.

Blood Orange essential oil is very rich in immune-supporting d-limonene. In fact, d-limonene comprises over 90% of the essential oil! This d-limonene content plus the uplifting energy of the oil make Blood Orange excellent to include in cold and flu essential oil blends, too.

Ho Wood (Cinnamomum camphora ct linalool)

Ho Wood has a gentle floral woody aroma. When inhaled it helps promote feelings of balance and harmony. It helps regulate emotions and enhances emotional well-being. As a middle note, Ho Wood also acts as an aromatics bridge between the top Blood Orange and the base Cedarwood in Autumn Calm.

Ho Wood contains a significant percentage of the chemical constituent linalool, well over 95%, which is more than another linalool-rich essential oil you likely know well—Lavender! Linalool is mostly known for its calming attributes, which is important in this blend. However, linalool is also both immune-supporting and cognition-enhancing!

Ho Wood essential oil is also gentle on skin. It makes a beautiful addition to bedtime skin care, like this Bedtime Body Oil.

Fun Fact: The Cinnamomum camphora tree actually produces 3 commercial aromatic oils: Ho Wood, Ravintsara, and White Camphor!

Virginian Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana)

Virginian Cedarwood

Out of the several “cedarwood” essential oils available, the cedarwood we are using in Autumn Calm is Virginian Cedarwood, which is actually a species of juniper.

Also known as Eastern Red Cedar, the wood of the tree is often used in aromatic cedar chests.

A grounding and stabilizing essential oil, Cedarwood promotes relaxation and reduces stress. Its warm, woody aroma has a calming effect on the nervous system, helping to alleviate feelings of anxiety and tension.

Cedarwood helps open breathing and relieve congestion. It’s one of my favorites to include in kid-safe blends for cough and congestion, like this shower steamer essential oil blend.

Here are three blends that feature more cedarwoods:

  • Frankinshine—a blend of Frankincense, Blood Orange, and Atlas Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica)
  • Serenity Synergy—a blend of Green Mandarin, Palmarosa, Rose Geranium, and Himalayan Cedarwood (Cedrus deodara)
  • Wintry Days—another blend featuring Virginian Cedarwood along with Sweet Orange, Black Spruce, Frankincense, and Cinnamon Leaf

Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans)

Warming Nutmeg essential oil is often added to a gentle carrier oil and used topically to ease tummy upset or cold aching joints. However, Nutmeg also has a calming effect on the nervous system, making it helpful for reducing stress and anxiety. Its warm, comforting aroma can also help to create a sense of relaxation and well-being.

Nutmeg essential oil contains a significant amount of pinenes (α & β) and sabinene, which contribute to its pain and inflammation-soothing nature and aroma. Pinenes are the phytochemicals abundant in forests and are an important part of forest bathing. I call pinenes “happy makers.”

Fun “Fact”: It’s said Nostradamus ingested large amounts of nutmeg while writing his prophesies. Hmmm…
