Ginger Citrus Aromatherapy Roll-On on MOMAROMAs

Ginger Citrus Energize Me! Essential Oil Roll-On

You know that time of day where you feel a little sluggish or droopy? Energize Me! is a fresh, spicy, citrusy essential oil roll-on to help activate energy and uplift the spirits.

I love essential oil roll-ons. They’re so simple to make and convenient to keep in a bag, desk drawer, or center console. A roll-on makes for easily accessible aromatherapy when you need it and combines the benefits of inhalation with the ease of topical application.

About this Essential Oil Roll-On

This recipe is going to appear a bit different than most you’ll see. That’s because this is an essential oil roll-on you will customize for yourself! By adjusting the drops of essential oil, you can change the aroma and energetics until you find the one that hits home for you.

Because the volume of carrier (Jojoba oil/wax) is small, we want to be extra cautious of the volume of essential oil as well. I recommend no more than a total of 6 drops of essential oil in a 10ml roller.

⭐️Energize Me! Essential Oil Roll-On Recipe

  • 10ml Roller bottle
  • 1-2 drops distilled Ginger essential oil (Zingiber officinale)
  • 1-2 drops Clementine essential oil (Citrus x clementina)
  • 1-2 drops Gingergrass essential oil (Cymbopogon martinii var Sofia)
  • Jojoba oil/wax (Simmondsia chinensis) or your favorite neutral lipid carrier oil

Customizing Your Energize Me! Essential Oil Roll-On

Remember: a maximum of 6 drops of essential oil will be used in this blend.

STEP 1: Even if you’ve smelled an essential oil a thousand times, always smell each oil individually before blending. The easiest way to do this is to remove and smell the cap by waving it slowly under your nose. What do you smell? Also note how you feel after smelling each one. Does it activate energy or make you smile? Keep each of those aromas in mind as you create your custom essential oil blend. If you need to, come back and smell each one again as you go through the blending process.

STEP 2: Let’s get to blending! Add one drop each of distilled Ginger, Clementine, and Gingergrass essential oils to your roller bottle. Swirl gently to combine.

STEP 3: Wave bottle slowly under your nose while inhaling gently. (I like to close my eyes.) Evaluate the aroma. What does it need?

  • Do you want more zing of spice? Add another drop of distilled Ginger.
  • Do you want more sparkling citrus? Add another drop of Clementine.
  • Do you want more freshness? Add another drop of Gingergrass.
  • Do you feel it’s just right as is? Add one more drop of each essential oil and move on to Step 6.

STEP 4: If you added a drop of essential oil in Step 3, cap that oil and set it aside.

STEP 5: Swirl the roller bottle gently to combine the new blend then smell again. Does it need anything? Repeat Step 3 with the remaining two essential oils. Cap and set aside each oil as it’s used until you’ve reached a maximum of 6 drops of essential oil in the roller bottle.

STEP 6: Carefully add Jojoba oil/wax or other neutral lipid carrier to the roller bottle to just below the shoulder.

STEP 7: Pop the roller in place and cap tightly.

STEP 8: Rock gently back and forth 20-30 times to thoroughly combine the essential oils with the carrier. Then roll the bottle rapidly between your palms for 30 seconds. This gives it an extra good mix and imparts a bit of your warming energy to the blend.

STEP 9: Finally, make a label with Energize Me! (or whatever name you choose), the ingredients, the date you made it, and the best by date. (How do you know the best by date? Learn more.)

Using Your Energize Me! Essential Oil Roll-On

Roll Energize Me! over pulse points—inner wrists, neck, and if you can access them, the insides of your upper arms, the backs of your knees, and the tops of your feet.

An essential oil roll-on applied to pulse points can help activate energy

If you are feeling a lot of tension, roll a bit on the tips of your index and middle fingers, then massage gently into your temples.

Finally, roll across one palm, rub hands together, cup hands around nose, and inhale slowly and deeply to help activate energy and revitalize the senses.

🔶️Note: As with all products created for use on your skin, test any topical aromatherapy blend on your inner elbow 24 hours before first use. Discontinue if any reaction develops.

BONUS: Make a Ginger Citrus Diffuser Blend!

When I’m having a day of just not feeling up to doing anything, this blend is a favorite in my diffuser.

Because this is your very own blend, just use the same number of drops of Ginger, Clementine, and Gingergrass you used in your essential oil roll-on in your diffuser. Easy-peasy!

☀️Research Spotlight: Ginger Improves Mood & Alertness

Ginger essential oils, fresh ginger root.

A small 2016 study at the University of Vienna, Austria compared the alertness of participants who were exposed to room air or air scented with Ginger essential oil, and a topical application of diluted Ginger essential oil or a control carrier oil.

Participants rated the inhaled and topically applied Ginger essential oil as “significantly more pleasant and familiar” than the controls. In the inhalation experiment, participants felt more alert after breathing the ginger scented air and their mood/humor improved.[1]

Why Jojoba and These Essential Oils?

Ginger (Zingiber officinale): Despite being steam distilled from a root, Ginger essential oil has an energizing, spicy and fresh, get-up-and-go aroma, and a bit like candied ginger. It enhances feelings of confidence and capability.

Clementine (Citrus x clementina): Like the other citruses, Clementine essential oil is mood boosting and uplifting, helping to relieve tension and promote positive energy. Its aroma is juicy and sweet with a touch of tartness.

Gingergrass (Cymbopogon martinii var Sofia): Gingergrass essential oil acts as the bridge between Ginger and Clementine. Its complex aroma contains notes of spicy ginger and sweet citrus. Its aroma warms the spirit and activates energy.

💚If you haven’t tried Gingergrass before, I highly recommend it—its versatility makes it a fabulous addition to any essential oil collection!

Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis): Jojoba has one of the longest shelf lives of all carrier oils. This is because it’s actually a liquid wax, making it extremely stable. Because it’s composition is very close to our natural sebum, Jojoba is a common carrier of choice by aromatherapists.

However, you can use any neutral lipid carrier you wish to use, just be aware of the best by date when making your selection. One my other favorite oils to use is Grapeseed because it’s light and absorbs easily.

Substitutions

It’s great when your have all the ingredients to make an aromatherapy recipe on hand, and it’s nice to know you can make substitutions when your need to!

Because this blend is focused on aroma and energetics, I’ve selected the following substitutions. Each of these essential oils uplift and activate energy and have related aromas.

  • For distilled Ginger substitute Ginger CO2 (Zingiber officinale)—this is a different extraction method from the same plant and therefore a slightly different, deeper, spicier aroma.
  • For Clementine substitute Tangerine (Citrus reticulata)—both have a juicy tart aroma and are high in immune-supporting d-Limonene.
  • For Gingergrass substitute Lemongrass ct rhodinol (Cymbopogon citratus ct rhodinol)—this is a skin-friendly type of lemongrass.

Remember that substituting essential oils will create a different aroma profile and blend energetics.
