The Summer brings with it longer days, blooming gardens, and a chance to soak up the warm weather. And with the Summer heat comes sluggishness and crankiness. Last week I shared my 7 Tips for Staying Cool along with a skin-nourishing After Sun Cooling Spray recipe. This week we’re diving into a Cooling Essential Oil Blend to diffuse or use in a room spray.

How Essential Oils Help You Beat Summer Heat
While essential oils can’t magically lower the room temperature, some can create a cooling sensation or promote feelings of relaxation and well-being, making the heat more bearable.
- Tricky Cooling: Certain essential oils like Peppermint, Spearmint, Corn Mint, and Eucalyptus have invigorating aromas that can stimulate temperature receptors in your nose. For example, the menthol in Peppermint and Corn Mint activates olfactory receptors creating a refreshing energy that tricks the trigeminal nerves that register cooling.
- Balance Mood: The hot and sticky weather can often lead to irritability. Essential oils like Lavender, Lavandin, Bergamot, and Bergamot Mint are known for their calming and mood-balancing properties. By promoting relaxation and reducing stress, they can help you feel more comfortable and less bothered by the heat.
- Bright Uplift: There’s something about the aroma of citrus that cleanses and brightens emotions. It it any wonder that we turn to citrus-ades in Summer heat? Citrus essential oils, like Lemon, Lime, Tangerine, and Clementine are especially bight and uplifting.
⭐Summer Heat Cooler Essential Oil Blend
Now, let’s get to the hero essential oil blend for Summer heat! This is one of my go-to blends for hot days, so I of course have a stock bottle on hand through the Summer. As soon as it starts to heat up outside I put a few drops in my diffuser and get my oscillating fan going!
- 4 drops Lavandin essential oil (Lavandula x intermedia)
- 2 drops Spearmint essential oil (Mentha spicata)
- 2 drops Clementine essential oil (Citrus x clementina)

Stock Bottle Drop Counts
Here are the drop counts for a 5ml essential oil bottle. This will hold about 100 drops of essential oil (depending on the viscosity of the oil and the size of the reducer orifice).
Add your drops directly to the essential oil bottle. Then insert the reducer and cap tightly. Finally roll the bottle between the palms of your hands. This allows the oils to fully blend with each other and it imparts a bit of your energy to the blend.
And remember: affix a label right away!

- 48 drops Lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia)

About this Essential Oil Blend
This combination of essential oils promotes a refreshing, invigorating, and uplifting atmosphere. It’s beautiful in a diffuser, and also great in a room spray.
- Lavandin (Lavandula x intermedia): A hybrid between True Lavender and Spike Lavender, Lavandin has both calming and breath-opening qualities. It has a floral, yet fresh aroma that contributes to it’s energy cleansing, uplifting nature. [True Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is an alternative.]

- Spearmint (Mentha spicata): I like to think of Spearmint essential oil as the Gentle Mint. It has a sweet, soft minty aroma. It can help clear the head, promote alertness, and refresh and invigorate the senses. [Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) and Bergamot Mint (Mentha bergamia) are alternatives.]
- Clementine (Citrus x clementina): Bright, juicy, and sweet, with just a touch of tartness, Clementine promotes positive energy and helps relieve tension and irritability. It’s uplifting energy and sweet aroma makes it one of my favorite citruses. It’s one of the ingredients in my popular Ginger Citrus Energize Me roll-on. [Tangerine (Citrus reticulata) is an alternative.]
Want to try something different? Replace the Clementine with Lime for an entirely different experience! Bright, juicy, and tart, Lime (Citrus x aurantifolia) also has a hint of sweetness in its aroma. It’s known for its uplifting properties and ability to promote a positive mood. Lime is available as a cold pressed or steam distilled essential oil—use the distilled version for skin application.
⭐Summer Heat Cooler Room Spray
A DIY room spray is a simple way to bring a refreshing and invigorating energy to your home and help beat Summer heat. It’s easy to make, customizable, and perfect for creating a cool, inviting atmosphere.
- 4 oz glass bottle with spray top
- 20 drops Lavandin essential oil (Lavandula x intermedia)
- 10 drops Spearmint essential oil (Mentha spicata)
- 10 drops Clementine essential oil (Citrus x clementina)
- or 10 drops Lime essential oil (Citrus x aurantifolia)
- 2 Tablespoons Everclear (or highest proof alcohol available)
- Distilled Water or Hydrosol (Lavender, Spearmint, and Peppermint are good options)
Let’s Make the Summer Heat Cooler Room Spray!
- Sanitize the bottle by simmering in water for 10 minutes, then remove to drain on a clean, dry towel.
- Combine essential oils and Everclear in bottle. Cap, shake to combine, and allow to sit for 30 minutes.
- Add distilled water or hydrosol. Cap and shake to combine.
The Everclear acts as both “preservative” and essential oil solubilizer. A room spray made with good sanitary practices and Everclear will last up to a year. A room spray made with a lower proof alcohol will not have as long a shelf-life.
To Use: Shake well. Then spray a few times towards the center of the room. Repeat as desired.
Summer Heat Shower Tip
Mist a few pumps of Summer Heat Cooler Room Spray on the walls of your shower several minutes before stepping in. Then shower as usual and enjoy the invigorating, energy cleansing aroma.
You could even include a couple of drops of the Summer Heat Cooler essential oil blend in a brown sugar scrub for glowing Summer skin.
