Celebrate with Cake Essential Oil Blend
Have you ever smelled a truly pure essential oil blend that reminds you of a bakery? You’ll be surprised by this one!
My goal was to create a blend that smelled like a celebration in recognition of the 1st Anniversary of the launch of momaromas.com! So, all last week I was blending and smelling and diffusing and adjusting. This happy celebratory essential oil blend was the result. I call it: Celebrate with Cake!

Get Stock Bottle Drop Counts
Here are the drop counts for a 5ml essential oil bottle. This will hold about 100 drops of essential oil (depending on the viscosity of the oil and the size of the reducer orifice).
Add your drops directly to the essential oil bottle. Then insert the reducer and cap tightly. Finally roll the bottle between the palms of your hands for at least 30 seconds. This allows the oils to fully blend with each other and it imparts a bit of your energy to the blend.
And remember: Affix a label right away!

Why These Essential Oils?
To me the bright lemony citrus aromas are happy and energizing. That sweet confectionery aroma of this blend comes from the combination of Black Spruce and Vanilla. The aroma of vanilla cake with lemon frosting brings a smile to my face.
Tangerine (Citrus reticulata)
One of the softer sweeter citruses, Tangerine essential oil is refreshing and uplifting. It also provides a calming influence that balances the high energies of the other citrusy aromas in this blend. Rich in the phytochemical d-limonene, Tangerine essential oil enhances feelings of well-being and reduces stress.(1)
In a pinch, if you don’t have Tangerine—which I highly recommend—Sweet Orange essential oil (Citrus x sinensis) will do.
Lemon Myrtle (Backhousia citriodora)
The vibrant lemony aroma of Lemon Myrtle essential oil is due to its richness in the phytochemical citral which comprises at least 85% of the chemical profile. While Lemon Myrtle is energetically refreshing, it also contains a high concentration of citral making it a potent germ-buster.(2)
Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus/C. flexuosus)
Also rich in citral, Lemongrass essential oil has a slightly more herbaceous lemon aroma. It’s richer and longer lasting, extending the lemony aroma of this blend. In addition to cleansing the air, Lemongrass tends to be energetically and spiritually purifying, helping to move stagnant energy and uplift emotions.
Black Spruce (Picea mariana)
I find Black Spruce essential oil to be one of the best for encouraging stress-relieving deep breaths that calm the mind and ease tension. This soothing essential oil also supports reflection, making it a perfect addition to a blend recognizing an anniversary!
Vanilla (Vanilla planifolia)
A cake wouldn’t be complete without vanilla. And a celebratory essential oil blend wouldn’t be complete without the deep, rich aroma of Vanilla oleoresin. Gently sweet, the aroma persists as a reminder of the celebration after the lighter lemony notes dissipate.
☀️Chemistry Spotlight: Citral in Stereo
Citral is actually a combination of two stereoisomeric aldehydes (the “-al” = aldehyde):
- Geranial, also known as trans-citral or Citral A.
- Neral, also known as cis-citral or Citral B.
Stereoisomers are:
- identical in molecular makeup, in this case the both geranial and neral have 10 carbon atoms, 16 hydrogen atoms, and 1 oxygen atom (C10H16O), but
- differ in the way the atoms are oriented to each other.
Geranial and neral almost always occur together as citral; and the essential oils that contain these molecules are generally potent antimicrobials. Due to its intense lemon aroma, citral is also known as “lemonal.”
The combination of the uplifting lemony aroma and the powerful germ-fighting nature, make essential oil blends containing citral-rich oils excellent for diffusion during cold & flu season. These essential oils are also potent ingredients in any green cleaning essential oil blend.
Essential oils rich in citral include Lemon Myrtle, Lemongrass, May Chang/Listea, Lemon Verbena, Lemon Eucalyptus, and Melissa.
Have you used any of these citral-rich essential oils in your blending? Which one is your favorite? Please let us know in the comments below!
