Make These 3 Herbal Teas for Summer Sadness

Herbal Teas for Summer Sadness Sunset by Christine Pressler, CA

Moments of Reflection: Summer Herbal Tea Blends

In the spirit of bringing plant wisdom into our daily lives, I am sharing a collection of herbal tea blends designed for moments of reflection. These infusions are both cooling and comforting, offering a gentle embrace during times of sadness or tension.

Why “Summer Sadness”? The herbal and aromatherapy community has lost two amazing and beloved educators this Summer: John Gallagher (LearningHerbs) and Andrea Butje (Aromahead Institute). Their absence has left a void in the hearts of everyone touched by their teachings. Their belief in the power of plants to heal, comfort, and uplift was a gift they both shared generously with the world.

I hope these simple, soothing recipes provide you with a moment of peace and a connection to the natural world they so loved.

About these Herbal Teas

The recipes below are listed in “parts”. These parts can be 1/2 teaspoon or 1 cup…or more! When I find a blend I love I make a jar of it for easy access.

All three can be made through cold, sun, or hot infusion. Use 1 slightly mounded tablespoon of the herbal tea blend per 8-10 ounces of water. Always use the best water possible when making herbal teas. And when making a large batch, sanitize the storage jar and promptly refrigerate any leftovers.

  • If using cold infusion, allow the herbs to sit in the water, covered, at room temperature for a few hours or in the refrigerator overnight. Remove herbs before serving and storing.
  • If making a sun infusion, cover the jar and place in the sun for up to 8 hours. Remove herbs before serving and storing.
  • If making a heat infusion, pour just boiled (not boiling) water over the herbs. Cover and allow to steep 7-10 minutes.

Find a quiet moment to prepare and sit with your cup of tea. The act of preparing and mindfully drinking a warm or cool beverage can be a supportive ritual in itself.

Balm & Bright Herbal Tea Blend

This blend provides a gentle, supportive presence. It combines herbs that have a calming effect with those traditionally used to uplift the mood.

Iced herbal tea with peppermint
  • Lemon Balm (2 parts): Often called the “gladdening herb,” Lemon Balm is a gentle nervine that soothes feelings of stress and sadness. Its bright, lemony aroma and flavor are naturally uplifting and can help lighten a heavy heart.
  • Chamomile (1 part): Chamomile is a classic calming herb. It’s gentle and effective at reducing anxiety and promoting a sense of peace. Its delicate, apple-like flavor is both comforting and familiar.
  • Spearmint (1 part): Spearmint offers a less intense, sweeter mint flavor than Peppermint. It provides a cooling sensation that feels refreshing, while also being a mild nervine. The crispness of the mint helps disperse feelings of lethargy and sadness.
  • Rose Petals (1/2 part): Rose is traditionally associated with the heart. The Rose Petals in this blend support heart opening and provide a sense of comfort and self-compassion. The gentle, floral aroma is incredibly soothing and feels like a gentle embrace.

How to prepare: This blend works well as either a cold, sun, or hot infusion. These delicate herbs benefit from a gentle steeping method. Lemon Balm, Chamomile, and Rose provide a gentle, comforting foundation. And chilling enhances the refreshing quality of the Spearmint.

For some extra brightness add a few freshly picked Peppermint or Spearmint leaves.

Root & Flower Calming Herbal Tea

This blend is deeply soothing and comforting, helping to calm a busy mind while providing a gentle, cooling sensation.

Passion Flower has a calming influence in herbal teas
  • Marshmallow Root (2 parts): Marshmallow Root provides a comforting, silky texture and a very mild, slightly sweet flavor. It’s an ideal soothing herb.
  • Passionflower (1 part): Passionflower is a wonderful nervine, used traditionally to reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. It has a calming effect and can help quiet racing thoughts, making it a great addition for emotional support.
  • Spearmint and/or Lemon Balm (1 part): Both Spearmint and Lemon Balm are good choices. Spearmint provides a clear, cool feeling, while Lemon Balm offers an uplifting citrusy note. Either will add a refreshing quality. Try them individually or together and see which you prefer!

How to prepare: This blend is particularly good as a refrigerated cold infusion. The Marshmallow Root needs time to release its mucilage, so an overnight steep in the refrigerator is best. Strain well and serve chilled.

Blessings & Blossoms Herbal Tea

This blend focuses on providing a sense of grounding and resilience. It combines the adaptogenic properties of Tulsi with the soothing nature of Rose Petals and/or Elderflower. Each of these herbs is associated with healing and protection. All three are among my favorite herbs for herbal teas.

  • Tulsi (Holy Basil) (2 parts): Tulsi is a revered herb in Ayurveda. Known as an adaptogen, it helps the body cope with stress and emotional turmoil. It has a slightly spicy, floral flavor and promotes a sense of clarity and mental peace.
  • Rose Petals and/or Elderflower (1 part): Both of these floral herbs add a delicate, subtle sweetness and a beautiful aroma. Rose Petals are a wonderful calming, heart-opener, while Elderflower is a gentle, cooling herb with a lovely aroma. Try them individually or together and see which you prefer!
