Favorite Fall Essential Oils
Beyond just smelling amazing, essential oils offer a holistic approach to enhancing our seasonal experience. They can uplift, calm, invigorate, and even help us breathe a little easier as the temperature drops.
Let’s explore some of my absolute favorite oils for this time of year!
Cinnamon (Cinnamomum spp.)
Cinnamon is practically the mascot of the season, isn’t it? We have two main types of essential oil: Cinnamon Bark and Cinnamon Leaf.
- Cinnamon Bark: This is the rich, warm, intensely spicy aroma we all know and love. You’ll find two types of Cinnamon Bark essential oil: True/Ceylon Cinnamon and Cinnamon Cassia. With either type, a little goes a long way!
- Cinnamon Leaf: Slightly milder, it has a true sweet cinnamon stick aroma.
Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans)
Often paired with cinnamon in baked goods, Nutmeg essential oil brings a similar warmth but with a distinctly sweeter, slightly creamier, and more subtle spice note. It’s wonderfully grounding and can help soothe the senses.
Scots/Scotch Pine (Pinus sylvestris)
Scotch Pine essential oil brings the invigorating, crisp aroma of a coniferous forest right into your home. It’s clarifying and energizing, perfect for cutting through the stuffiness of closed-up homes regardless of season.
Clove Bud (Syzygium aromaticum / Eugenia caryophyllata)
Clove Bud essential oil is intensely warm, rich, and undeniably spice-like, but not spicy. It has a strong, penetrating aroma that instantly evokes mulled cider, holiday baking, and general coziness. Like Cinnamon Bark, a little goes a long way!

Stove Top Simmer Pot: Here’s an old-fashioned way to scent your home, and one of my favorites! Fill a pot with water, add orange peels, cinnamon sticks, and a few clove buds. Simmer gently on the stove. (Pictured here is my Winter Simmer Pot recipe.)
Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum)
Often overlooked, Cardamom essential oil is a true gem. It’s warm, spicy, balsamic, and subtly sweet with a unique exotic flair. It adds a sophisticated twist to any blend and is wonderfully uplifting. It’s breath-opening quality is perfect for sweater weather respiratory support.
Ginger (Zingiber officinalis)
Ginger essential oil is spicy, warm, and distinctly zesty. It’s known for its invigorating and stimulating properties, making it perfect for those days when you need a little extra spark to get going or are craving a bit of warmth.
You’ll find a few types of Ginger essential oil, each with their own aroma:
- Steam distilled from freshly cut ginger—a bit like candied ginger, sweet and spicy
- Steam distilled from dried ginger—deep, earthy, spicy
- A CO2 version—like smelling freshly cut ginger, spicy, fresh

Sweet Orange (Citrus x sinensis)
Last but certainly not least, Sweet Orange essential oil bright, cheerful, and uplifting. It blends beautifully with all the warm spices, adding a delightful effervescence and mood-boosting quality. It’s like a perpetual happy “hello!”
A Sweater Weather Icon: The PSL

We’ve talked about all the lovely essential oils of the season, but what’s sweater weather without its official mascot? That’s right, the legendary Pumpkin Spice Latte.
Now, while this doesn’t come with a shot of espresso and whipped cream (sorry!), it can absolutely provide the next best thing: an aromatic tribute to this iconic beverage of the season.
This blend captures all the warm, spicy, inviting notes of a PSL, for an aroma that’s also warm, inviting, and truly feels like a treat!

The PSL Stock Bottle Drop Counts
Here are the drop counts for a 5ml essential oil bottle. This will hold about 100 drops of essential oil (depending on the viscosity of the oil and the size of the reducer orifice).
Add your drops directly to the essential oil bottle. Then insert the reducer and cap tightly. Rock the bottle several times. And, lastly roll the bottle between the palms of your hands for at least 30 seconds. This allows the oils to fully blend with each other and it imparts a bit of your energy to the blend.
And remember: Affix a label right away!
The PSL Stock Bottle
- 33 drops Sweet Orange (Citrus x sinensis)
- 22 drops Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans)
- 11 drops Clove Bud (Syzygium aromaticum / Eugenia caryophyllata)
- 11 drops Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum)
- 11 drops Cinnamon Leaf (Cinnamomum verum)
This recipe will leave enough room in the 5ml bottle to add 11 drops of Scotch Pine if you like. (See “A Walk in the Woods with The PSL” below.)
A Walk in the Woods with The PSL
We all know how great Forest Bathing is for our health. If you’re feeling adventurous and want a “walk in the woods while sipping your latte” vibe, add 1 drop of Scotch Pine to The PSL diffuser blend. It adds an unexpected layer of crisp, fresh air that’s surprisingly wonderful.
So grab your coziest knitted sweater, a warm mug of tea or cider with a cinnamon stick, and let these incredible essential oils transform your home into a sanctuary of warmth and wonder. Here’s to making this Sweater Weather season the most aromatic and delightful one yet.
