As the leaves turn crisp and colorful and the evening air grows chilly, October brings the perfect excuse to transform our homes into atmospheric sanctuaries. While candles and spooky decor set the mood, nothing captures the true spirit of Autumn quite like scent. Especially when that scent carries a story, as with this Halloween essential oil blend.
Experience this (un)earthy diffuser blend with deeply grounding essential oils and a ghostly whisper of Jasmine.

Inspiration for this Halloween Essential Oil Blend
Have you ever walked into a room and sensed that someone had just left, even though you knew the house was empty?
Perhaps it was a fleeting impression. A subtle shift in the atmosphere. Or a fragrance that seemed to have no earthly explanation.
Some scents announce themselves boldly. Others are more elusive, appearing for a moment before disappearing into the air. And then there are those that leave you wondering whether what you smelled was simply a trick of the imagination.
For Halloween, I wanted to create an essential oil blend that captured that last sensation. Something earthy and mysterious, with the faintest trace of a beautiful perfume lingering in the shadows.
I call it A Ghostly Presence.
But before we get to the recipe, let me tell you a story.
When the Air Remembers: A Fragrant Ghost Story
A friend once told me about an experience she had while looking at a turn-of-the-century house she was thinking of buying.
She’d fallen in love with the house before she even stepped inside. It had shutter-framed windows, beautiful old woodwork, and an overgrown garden that looked as though it had a thousand stories to tell. The sort of house that makes you imagine the lives of all the people who had called it home.

The owner had passed away years earlier, and the house had been sitting empty for some time. My friend didn’t mind. She could see past the dust and faded wallpaper to the possibilities. She was already imagining where she’d create a reading nook.
As she wandered through the downstairs rooms, she noticed an unusual scent.
It was earthy and dusty, with a deep, almost root-like quality. Not unpleasant, just old. It reminded her of a garden that had been left untended for years, where fallen leaves had slowly returned to the soil, and Nature had reclaimed what was once cultivated.
She thought little of it at first. After all, the house had been closed up for a long time.
Then she went upstairs.
Halfway down the hallway, she caught the unmistakable scent of jasmine.
It was delicate, sweet, and fleeting. The sort of fragrance that makes you turn your head because you feel certain someone has just walked past wearing perfume.
But no one was there.
She paused and looked into the nearest rooms. The windows were closed, the rooms were empty, and there was no obvious source for the fragrance.
The jasmine faded.
Then she noticed the earthy smell again. It seemed to drift through the hallway, lingering just long enough to catch her attention before disappearing. And beneath it, so faint she almost wondered whether she’d imagined it, came that whisper of jasmine once more.
She told me she couldn’t shake the feeling that someone else was in the house. Not in a frightening way. There was no sudden chill, no mysterious footsteps, no slamming doors. Just an odd sense of presence, as though the house had not entirely let go of the person who had once lived there.
Later, she learned that the previous owner had loved her garden. She filled her home with the fragrant flowers she’d grown and had been known for wearing jasmine perfume.
My friend never claimed she’d seen a ghost. She couldn’t explain what she’d smelled, and she wasn’t particularly interested in trying to prove the house had been haunted.
But she remembered the experience. What stayed with her wasn’t a feeling of fear. It was the peculiar combination of scents: that deep, dusty earthiness, followed by the faintest trace of jasmine.
As she finished telling me the story, she said with a smile, “Maybe it was just the house.”
Perhaps it was.
Or perhaps the woman who had once tended her garden with love had left behind a little more than memories.
A Ghostly Presence Halloween Essential Oil Blend
I’ve thought about that story often. There’s something fascinating about the way a fragrance can evoke a place, suggest a presence, or make us feel as though we’ve stepped into someone else’s memory.
And it got me thinking. What if we could capture that feeling in a diffuser blend?
Not a fragrance that announces itself boldly, but one that reveals itself slowly. Something earthy, aged, and mysterious, with the faintest whisper of jasmine perfume.
And that’s the inspiration behind this year’s Halloween essential oil blend: A Ghostly Presence.
⭐️A Ghostly Presence Diffuser Blend Recipe
- 3 drops Bergamot (Citrus bergamia)
- 2 drops Aged Dark Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin)
- 2 drops Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha)
- 1 drop Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanoides)
- Trace Jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum / J. sambac)

A Ghostly Presence Stock Bottle Drop Counts
Here are the drop counts for a 5ml essential oil bottle. This will hold about 100-120 drops of essential oil (depending on the viscosity of the oil and the size of the reducer orifice). I generally aim for 100 as I’d rather go under than over!
Add your drops directly to the essential oil bottle. Then insert the reducer and cap tightly. Rock the bottle several times. And, lastly roll the bottle between the palms of your hands for at least 30 seconds. This allows the oils to fully blend with each other and it imparts a bit of your energy to the blend.
And remember: Affix a label right away!
A Ghostly Presence Stock Bottle
- 36 drops Bergamot (Citrus bergamia)
- 24 drops Aged Dark Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin)
- 24 drops Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha)
- 12 drop Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanoides)
- About 3-4 drops Jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum / J. sambac)
Meet the Spirits Behind the Scent
Each essential oil has a distinct aromatic personality, and together, they create the impression of an old house and the elusive woman who still walks its halls.
Bergamot
Bergamot brings a bright, fresh citrus aroma with subtle floral qualities. It lifts the darker notes and creates an inviting opening to the blend.
Bergamot’s Scent Story: Bergamot is the sudden breath of air moving through a room that has been closed for decades.
Patchouli
Patchouli’s aroma calls to mind soil, fallen leaves, old wood, and gardens slowly returning to the wild. Aging can soften and transform its aromatic character, adding depth and complexity.
Patchouli’s Scent Story: Rich, earthy, and deeply evocative, Dark Aged Patchouli provides the shadowy foundation. It gives the blend its dusty, mysterious quality.
Myrrh
Long associated with incense, perfumery, and ceremonial traditions, Myrrh lends the blend an ancient quality.
Myrrh’s Scent Story: It evokes forgotten treasures, old wooden chests, and rooms where time seems to have stopped.
Vetiver
Vetiver has a distinctive earthy, woody, sweet rooty aroma. Depending on its origin and distillation technique, it may also reveal smoky, leathery, or green facets.
Vetiver’s Scent Story: Vetiver evokes roots gently lifting old stones and forgotten paths disappearing beneath years of growth. Vetiver gives the blend its deepest connection to the earth.
Jasmine
Jasmine’s rich, sweet floral aroma can be intensely powerful, sometimes revealing fruity, green, or animalic nuances. Even a tiny amount can influence an entire composition. This is why we’re using just a trace.
Jasmine’s Scent Story: Against the earthy depth of Patchouli, Myrrh, and Vetiver, Jasmine becomes something unexpected.
You might not notice it immediately. You might need to pause and inhale again.
That’s the beauty of it.
Jasmine is the whisper of elegance that time has not quite managed to erase.

The Toothpick Swirl: Adding a Trace of Essential Oil
I love using a toothpick swirl when I want only the suggestion of a powerful oil, like Jasmine, in a blend. To use this technique:
- Start with a clean toothpick.
- Touch the tip to a drop of oil as it emerges from the reducer.
- Swirl the toothpick through the other oils in your diffuser reservoir or blending vessel.
- This technique creates a whisper of aroma.
In A Ghostly Presence, the toothpick swirl lets Jasmine remain mysterious. You may not immediately identify it, but you will notice its soft, floral elegance weaving through the earthy and resinous notes.
A Final Fragrant Thought
The most interesting fragrances are often the ones that invite us to use our imaginations.
A familiar scent can bring back a forgotten memory. An unexpected fragrance can make us stop in our tracks. And sometimes, a combination of aromas can evoke an entire place, even when we have never been there.
A Ghostly Presence is my little Halloween exploration of that idea.
Bergamot opens the door. Patchouli and Vetiver draw us into the shadows. Myrrh tells us that this place has been here a very long time.
And Jasmine? Jasmine leaves us wondering who just walked by.
Or perhaps it was only a trick of the imagination.
Happy Halloween, and may your Autumn be filled with a bit of mystery and a touch of magic.
